D-Day. The invasion of Normandy. Its a well known story. A lesser known story of June 6th, 1944 revolves around the courageous frogmen who helped make the invasion a success.
The axis powers suspecting an invasion had lined the beaches of Normandy with mines and underwater steel obstacles known as 'hedgehogs.' They were designed to block the incoming ships. Without a path to get through the obstacles the boats were sitting ducks for big german guns and artillery units. The soldiers in the landing craft would drown in the deeper water and the boats would be sunk.
A small elite unit known as the Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDUs) entered the cold murky waters under the cover of darkness before the main force. Before the invention of wetsuits they swam in shorts with knives and explosives and set charges on the obstacles clearing a path for the successful invasion. They were known as the 'Naked Warriors' and were the forefathers of the modern day SEAL teams.
On June 6th, 2018, a group of 30 active duty, retired SEALs, and elite civilians will pay homage to these incredible warriors. We will be completing the epic charity challenge simulating the arduous nature of their mission 74 years ago. The group will complete a 6.2 mile swim in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic followed by a 20mile ruck run around the beaches off the Normandy coast.
We are commemorating D-Day by honoring those who have gone before us and those who continue to serve. Please support my journey. All proceeds are donated to the Navy SEAL Museum which honors the courage and fortitude of the men who served and provides for the families of fallen SEALs.
Its an honor to be on this mission. Please join me in supporting real change. Let's support good in the world and make a difference. Help us
